Dy CM buckles, says was referring to Hindu culture

VASCO: Insisting that his remark describing himself as a ‘Christian Hindu’ had been taken out of context, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza clarified that he had never referred to the Hindu religion, but that it was the Hindu culture that existed for 5000 years.

Speaking to media on the sidelines of distribution of wet and dry garbage bins to the residents of Ward 17 at New Vaddem, Vasco, on Sunday, D’Souza said, “Whatever statement I made was my personal opinion and it is not binding on anyone.”
D’Souza said when he meant Christian Hindu he did not refer to Hindu religion, but to the Hindu culture which existed for last 5000 years. “Christianity came into existence during the last 2000 years and I am Christian, but the people in India have been following the Hindu culture for the last 5000 years,” stated D’Souza.
When Herald brought to his notice that he is representing the people and people tend to take his statement seriously, D’Souza said his statement is not to harm any sentiments of the people, as the statement is not regarding any religion but of culture.
“Till date, I do not know what is Hindu religion and no one will be able to explain the exact meaning of Hindu religion. Hindu is a culture which people have been following for the last 5000 years and my statement should not be related to the religion,” D’Souza added.
