MAPUSA: Deputy Collector and SDM Bardez Gurudas Desai on Wednesday called for a meeting to discuss the issue of rising begging activities in the jurisdiction of Mapusa Municipal Council, especially in the market.
The meeting was attended by officials of Mapusa Police Station, Mapusa Municipal Council and Co-ordinator of GOACAN Roland Martin.
After the meeting, the Bardez SDM directed the local police and municipal council to conduct a surprise raid and detained the people/beggars and immediately deport them to their respective States and if they find any person/beggar with mental disability, the same should be admitted to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Bambolim.
The Deputy Collector and SDM, Bardez also gave instructions to the Social Welfare Department to work out on a long-term solution in this respect. For this, the department can move a proposal to the government for a construction of rehabilitation centre for such beggars to stay temporarily till they are deported to their respective States.
