Vasco: Mormugao Deputy Collector Sabaji Shetye inspected the municipal solid waste management plant of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Tuesday and raised serious concerns over the slow pace of operations.
The visit was in view of directions issued by South Goa Collector Sachin Shinde to inspect the plant at Sada and file a report so as to give further directions to MMC in view of the bird-hit cases reported at Dabolim airport and to find solutions to curb the same.
At an earlier meeting on October 6, 2015 at Dabolim Airport, Shinde had directed MMC that has its garbage plant at Headland Sada, to clear the garbage dump by January 30, 2016. According to Navy officials this has been the cause of bird movement around Dabolim airport. However, after inspecting the site Shetye felt meeting the deadline would be difficult as operations at the plant are slow.
“I was shocked to see the operation at the plant slow with several instruments defunct. I also noticed that the garbage at the plant has accumulated in huge quantity and removing this within the deadline is somewhat difficult. I will file my report with the facts observed by me,” Shetye told Herald.
Officials from Chemtrols Industries Limited who are managing the plant with the help of MMC claimed they have been receiving no support from the government to overcome the issues they face. They also complained that MMC has placed people at the site to segregate the garbage but the process is slow and the bailing machine is not working for many weeks due to technical faults, further delaying the process.
“We are managing the affairs without making any profit from the plant. The manure produced has no market and there is no support from any concerned authorities to provide us a market for the manure produced,” Chemtrols official P Rajendran Nair said.
MMC officials also brought to Shetye’s notice that door-to-door collection faced a hurdle after a few vehicles broke down leaving the system paralysed as though segregation at source happens, the garbage get mixed up during the transportation stage
