PANJIM: In a proud moment for Goa Police, its deputy superintendent of police Edwin Colaco is amongst 162 best investigators from across the country to be awarded the “Union Home Minister’s Medal for excellence in Investigation for the year 2018.”
Colaco, presently posted as DySP (Security) is awarded for his meticulous investigation into a sexual assault case while he was posted as Colva police inspector in the year 2009. The case, pertaining to sexual assault of an intellectually disabled woman led to conviction of the prime accused and the abettor.
As per the charge-sheet filed within 74 days of the case, on June 17, 2009, the mother of a 34-year-old reported to the police that her neighbour on the pretext of providing her daughter – who was slow in IQ – domestic work in another town in Goa took her away from the residence. Thereafter, the neighbour’s sister hired the victim as a domestic help in a house at Varca where the owner allegedly sexually assaulted her as well as committed un-natural sex against her will. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code was soon registered against the man and the two sisters.
The Session Court at Margao tried the prime accused and second sister as co-accused for offences of rape and abetment. In May 2010, it convicted and sentenced both to seven years .
of imprisonment.
Colaco’s flawless investigation skills were appreciated by the MHA that approved his name for the award along with selective police officers from other States.
