Each summer, Kudai faces severe water shortage

QUEPEM: This may sound strange, but the ground reality at Kudai in Khola is that in the absence of Public Works Department (PWD) pipeline in the area, each summer, the residents are hit by a severe water shortage, compelling them depend on natural sources such as river and springs in the hilly areas to meet their water needs.

During the monsoon they have no problem as the get plenty of water from natural springs located on the hills at Barcem, Morpirla and Khola. However, their trouble begins during the summer season.

Social worker Gaurang Kamat said that some years ago the villagers constructed a tank to collect water from the natural springs located on the hills. They collected water that was used by around 30 families.

“However, due to lack of maintenance, the water in the tank has been contaminated as the same is filled with waste including soil and dry leaves,” he said. Another local Gaurav Naik cautioned that people could contract several infections and suffer serious ailments, if they continue to consume the contaminated water from the tank.

“It is unfortunate that the village panchayat did not pay heed to the people’s demand to cover the tank in order to prevent leaves and soil from falling into it,” he said, pointing out that villagers’ attempt to cover the tank with nets has failed.

Given the fact that Goa is experiencing a scorching summer this year, the residents of this hamlet have tough days ahead.
