Eatable packets seized in Margao raid

MARGAO, JUNE 21
GOACAN conducted a surprise raid at the Kadamba Bus Standat Margao on Monday as part of the ongoing awareness week on consumer rights and got officials of the Department of Legal Metrology and Directorate of Food and Drug Administration to book offences against the owners of the shops for violations of the Acts & Rules in force.
The department of legal Metrology also seized 342 packets of eatables from the six shops located at the Bus stand.
Volunteers of Civic and Consumer forums participated in the raid at the bus stands following complaint from public that the eatables were being sold in the stalls without authorized labels.
GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins said the raid was being conducted to convey a message to the government to first clean up its one house before asking people and other establishments on unhygienic eatables.
Martins and the KTC depot incharge, Luis had a verbal duel after the activists demanded to know why no complain box is being installed at the bus stand.
“The goods were being sold to the people in violation of rules. There was no name of manufacturer, price, address and other details. This has been going for a long time despite complaints”, he said, adding that the forum activists have first focusing on the bus stand because the stalls are patronized by the common man.
FDA Inspector Rajiv told newsmen that similar raids will continue as food and other items are being sold without the mandatory labels.
Martins said that GOACAN is concerned that these shops have been granted licences by KTC Ltd and using their vantage position at the Bus stand exploit the consumers by putting these food items for sale. He said the Bus stand is visited by thousands of commuters daily besides the bus conductors and drivers who purchase food items from these shops. “Today’s action was planned to send a strong message to the shop keepers, manufacturers and suppliers that the Consumer Forums will not tolerate this abuse of the law”, he added.
