PANJIM: The two-and-half-month model code of conduct (MCC), which was in force for the Lok Sabha polls and by-elections, has been lifted with immediate effect from Sunday.
In a communication to Chief Secretaries of all States, Election Commission of India (ECI) Secretary Ajoy Kumar said that since the results of general elections to the Lok Sabha and some State Legislative Assemblies, including Goa, have been declared, the MCC has ceased to be in operation with immediate effect.
The code had come into force on March 10, when the ECI had announced the election schedule for the Parliamentary constituencies and by-elections to several State Assemblies.
In Goa, the Lok Sabha polls and by-elections in Mandrem, Shiroda and Mapusa were held on April 23, while Panjim voted on May 19. Counting took place on May 23.
ECI earlier this month, had relaxed the election code for Goa for undertaking pre-monsoon works. However, it had restrained the State from issuing any work orders, other than pre-monsoon works, till the counting period is over.
