PANJIM: Amidst uproar by opposition in the Parliament, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has welcomed the bill to link electoral roll data with the Aadhar ecosystem, stating that the poll reforms were awaited for last 25 years.

The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, was passed by both the houses of Parliament, with opposition staging walkout.

Addressing media persons in Goa, ECI Chief Election commissioner Sushil Chandra said “this is a very useful law”.

“The Bill will help us in eliminating double voters. The electoral roll will be very clean,” he said while assuring that no names will be deleted without full verification.

Another provision of the bill will allow new voters to enrol on four different dates every year. Currently, those turning 18 on or before January 1 of every year are only eligible to register as voters.

“Now there are four dates in a year, listed in the Bill, …young voters will be able to get enroll in the electoral roll four times a year…you don’t have to wait for 365 days,” he said.
