PANJIM: Despite
there being nearly 40,000 colleges imparting higher education across India,
nearly 93 percent of the students fail to pursue a post graduate course, Vice
Chancellor of Mumbai University, Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, said.
Speaking
at the concluding function of S S Dempo College
of Commerce and Economics Golden Jubilee Year celebrations, the VC said this was
essentially because of economic disparity.
“We have still not reached a large section of students as 93
percent have not got the opportunity to do their PG studies. There are around
40,000 colleges in the country but a big challenge is to reach the unreached.
All this is because of economic disparity besides other aspects contributing to
it,” he said, addressing a gathering on the topic ‘Higher education in India: Opportunities
and Challenges’.
He expressed concern over big gaps between a student gaining
a degree and securing a job. Speaking on the quality of education, Deshmukh
suggested a shift in order to make students capable of a better future. “There
is a shift required in the imparting of knowledge system. The syllabi today
doesn’t help students to stand on their own feet,” he said hinting at the
traditional education system prevailing in some parts of the country.
“The syllabi should be revised and made into project-based
courses. We are in the process of implementing it in Mumbai University for
students in their last year of graduation in various disciplines,” he added.
The professor also sought going beyond geographical lines by giving importance
to distance and online system of study too.
Newly-appointed Registrar of Goa University Y V Reddy spoke
of Goa University’s latest achievement on becoming the only state university to
compete with central varsities by making it to the top 20 of 100 institutes
ranked in the first National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). He also
mentioned about quality education imparted in Goan institutes.
To commemorate the Golden Jubilee Year, the college
management planned a number of activities through the year laying emphasis on
all-round development of the personality of the students.
