PANJIM:  Former external affairs minister Eduardo Faleiro said that it was most unfortunate that the BJP National Executive should nominate Narendra Modi as chairman of their National Election Campaign Committee, calling it an indication that he could be the party’s prime ministerial candidate.

“Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat and he presided over the worst communal riots that this country has ever witnessed. He did nothing to prevent the massacre of Muslims in that State and he has been repeatedly faulted by the Supreme Court of India for failing to prosecute the guilty,” Faleiro alleged in a press communiqué arguing that the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had described it as “barbaric and inhuman.”

Stating that the Chairman of the Press Council of India and former judge of the Supreme Court, Markandey Katju, has termed Modi unfit for the PM’s post, he said that the former judge said that India will not survive if Modi becomes the next Prime Minister of the country.
