Education Dept asks schools to educate students on hygiene, sanitation

PANJIM: Taking ahead the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the education department has urged all the school authorities to educate students about personal hygiene, sanitation and drinking water. The awareness campaign will be in line with pan-India launch of National Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Awareness Week by Narendra Modi-government starting on March 16.

A circular to all government and aided schools and higher secondary schools, requests the heads of the institutions to conduct various activities such as competitions involving teachers and students, besides ensuring a healthy discussion on the subject daily. 
 “For this effort to be successful on large scale you (educational institutions) are requested to participate and contribute positively in this exercise. To undertake this campaign, the schools may conduct various activities involving teachers and students,” reads the circular issued by Director Gajana Bhat. 
The focus of the campaign will be creating awareness on the national cleanliness mission to maintain villages clean, building and use of toilets, importance of hand washing with soap, safe handling and storage of drinking water, water conservation and participatory approach to operations & maintenance of water supply system. 
 “The schools may conduct daily discussion (on the) issues of sanitation, personal hygiene and drinking water after prayer meeting on each day of the campaign, competitions (essays, debates, play, posters, music, etc.), elocution contest at taluka or zonal level…” it further reads with suggestion to display awareness posters with messages at every school.
