PANJIM:  It has been recommended to educational institutions in Goa to undertake necessary steps to protect students, especially girls from any potentially unsafe situations.

Participating in a two-day workshop on topic ‘Together for Children, Mental Health of Children and Adolescents’ organized by Children’s Rights in Goa, those working on child rights also suggested that children need to be understood rather than penalized.

“Incidents of abuses of students in schools are disturbing. The teachers and principals should adopt preventive measures against such brutalities,” Goa Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson Sameera Kazi said.

“Stress is driving pupils to suicide… child labour is also rampant and now molestation cases are on the rise,” Kazi, chief guest at the workshop, said further.

The month back old incident of rape on a class X student by an art teacher from a government school shocked the teaching fraternity even as the accused was arrested and is presently behind bars.

The child rights activists asked the elders to build a strong understanding with children and adolescents and parents should trust their children.

“The Child Protection Policy has been drafted… Children should be well understood and guided at homes and schools. Headmasters should be provided guidance courses for a proper implementation of the policy,” Bhaskar Naik, Chairman of Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education of Goa.

Others opined that  with changing lifestyles, broken families are increasing and this is affecting the mental health of children.
