MAPUSA: The opposition parties along with citizens staged a protest against defection of eight Congress MLAs into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Mapusa on Sunday.

The protestors under the banner ‘Amdarchorasur’ gave slogans like “If MLAs are at sale, people will unite and yell”.

Addressing the protestors, Aldona Congress MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira said that the protest was against the unconstitutional act of “robbing MLAs and defection”. He said that Tenth Schedule of the Constitution is a good law, but it is being misused. This is being done by misusing various agencies of the government to harass, threaten, extort and kidnap MLAs,” he charged.

Adv Ferreira said that the eight MLAs who have stated that they joined BJP for the sake of development have only done so for their personal development and not for the sake of the people.

Later, the protestors burnt the effigy of ‘Amdarchorasur’ as a symbol of defectors.
