MARGAO: Will the fish vendors squatting near the Nehru Stadium junction be finally shifted to make way for a broad road leading to the stadium ahead of the Lusofonia Games?
While plans were earlier afoot to rehabilitate the half-a-dozen fish vendors on the road leading to Don Bosco, it has now been proposed to shift the vendors along with other vendors in the SAG property at the stadium.
In fact, the GSIDC consultant appointed to oversee the widening of roads leading to the Nehru stadium which would play host to the Lufosonia Games early next year, on Wednesday inspected the site for the shifting and rehabilitation of the fish vendors and other vendors near the stadium.
After the inspector, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai said that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has agreed not just to shift the Chapel at the junction little further behind the stadium property, but to accommodate the vendors at the site. “Besides the chapel, we have drawn up a plan to shift behind the stalls along the stadium road from the Chapel. And, along with these vendors, we plans to shift the fish vendors with all amenities,” Vijai Sardesai added.
The MLA along with GSIDC officials held discussions with the fish vendors on Wednesday and hoped the chief minister would engage the Chowgule management for acquiring a portion of the land for the road widening.
Incidentally, the Margao Municipal Council had in the past proposed to build a satellite market in Fatorda to accommodate the fish vendors squatting near the stadium junction, but the proposal did not take concrete shape for want of land.
