Election gimmick? Recruitment age increased to 45

Decision comes into effect from Friday; CM says decision taken keeping in view high unemployment rate; no proposal to increase retirement age

PANJIM: In an election gimmick, the State government on Friday decided to increase the maximum recruitment age in government service to 45 from the existing 40. The decision was taken by the council of ministers at the Cabinet meeting.
Disclosing this at a press conference, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said the decision has been taken in view of the unemployment rate. “The maximum age for recruitment in government departments has been increased from 40 to 45,” he said.
However, he added, this does not include recruitment in the police force, fire services etc. “This also does not include recruitment in government department where the maximum age was above 40 like professors etc,” he said.
Parsekar said the decision will come into effect from Friday. “However, those recruitments wherein the last day of filing application is after today (Friday), we will ask those departments to issue fresh corrigendum on the maximum age and give 10 day grace period for new applications,” he said adding, “This decision was necessary to keep the unemployment rate in check.”
Asked whether there is any change in retirement age, he replied in the negative. “There is no proposal as such with the government. But this is done as the survey by the government says that the maximum average life span of a person has increased to 70 in Goa,” he stated.
