Electric pole crashes, Marcel rider dies, pillion seriously injured

PONDA: Forty-seven-year-old rider Kishor alias Keshav Naik, a resident of Palsare-Marcel died after an electric pole crashed on him while proceeding on his scooter from Palsare to Marcel on Sunday afternoon.

Forty-year-old Shyam Naik also from Palsare-Marcel was pillion riding with Keshav, also sustained serious head injuries. 

Kishor died on his way to the hospital while Shyam has been referred to GMC.

In another incident, Jayram  Naik (38) from Undir-Bandora sustained head injury after falling off his bike and was shifted to GMC.

Cyclone Tauktae caused havoc in Ponda as fire personnel were kept on their toes. They received around 70 calls with most remaining unattended.

Several areas in the taluka were left without power supply as strong winds damaged electric poles and led to the snapping of power lines.  

EE Vallabh Samant said, “Around 50 poles were damaged in tree uprooting incidents. Curti Power Sub Station faced a major breakdown plunging most areas into darkness. We are trying to restore power supply on a war footing.”

Heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds lashed Ponda as several trees got uprooted, power lines were snapped in tree uprooting incidents, major roads were blocked, houses too were damaged, Bagayats, agricultural crops horticulture were also destroyed. 

Electricity and Fire Dept personnel were busy restoring power supply and clearing the roads.
