PANJIM: A lower division clerk with the Electricity Department has been booked for cheating the government to the tune of Rs 28 lakh in a span of two years. He was interrogated by Mapusa police though an arrest has been ruled out.
Vinod Vasant Mayenkar, suspended following an internal inquiry by the department, was summoned for questioning at Mapusa PS on Wednesday where he was grilled for over 4 hours.
As per the complaint filed by the department’s executive engineer M G Dessai, Mayenkar allegedly prepared salary bills of staffers by adding names of fictitious persons as the department’s employees.
“He committed the fraud between April 2014 and Feb 22, 2016. When the matter came to the fore, the department initiated an internal inquiry that found him guilty. He was suspended and a police complaint was filed,” a police officer said.
The accused was entrusted with the preparation and submission of staff salary bills. “He would route the money to different bank accounts. We have ordered the banks to freeze his account pending probe, which will reveal further details,” he said.
