MARGAO: The office of the Electricity Department at Aquem-Margao has urgently requested the Margao Municipal Council to relocate the garbage collection and segregation point, citing it as a nuisance to both staff and citizens visiting the office.
In a formal letter addressed to the civic body, the Electricity Department highlighted that garbage segregation conducted on the premises of the electricity department quarters near the office of the sub-divisional engineer, sub-division I, Benaulim, Division XVI, and the Superintending Engineers quarters in Aquem Alto, Margao, has led to severe disruptions.
“The designated garbage collection personnel collect waste from their assigned localities and segregate dry and wet waste near our office premises. This process often results in garbage littering the surrounding area,” stated the letter.
The department claimed that the collected garbage is stored near the premises until the municipal vehicle arrives for collection. The transferring of waste from garbage bins into the municipal vehicle often results in the leakage of wastewater and spillage, creating a mess and leading to the accumulation of garbage and leachate in the nearby drain, which produces a foul odour and attracts pests. “This not only disrupts the work environment of our employees but also poses serious health hazards. The stench and scattered waste attract pests and create an unhygienic condition for staff,” the letter further stated.
