PONDA: The locals residing near St Anne’s Church in Ponda’s Upper Bazaar area have raised concerns over the shoddy cabling work done by the staff of the Electricity Department, who have used a roadside tree as an electric pole to hold up a power cable. The Department has tied the service wire connection to the branch of a dry tree to supply power to a building.
Viraj Sapre, a local social worker, said that he had brought the hazardous arrangement to the notice of the Electricity Department. The two supply wires from the electricity pole to the tree are suspended above the main road, and if the tree or branch to which the wire is tied collapses, the service wire would fall onto the road, posing grave danger to motorists and pedestrians alike.
“Due to the heat and electric current, one tree has already died, and its dry frame can be seen at the spot. Now, the Electricity Department has tied this service wire to another tree, which has also become dry now,” he added.
The locals have urged the Department to address the issue before someone gets injured, or worse. Sapre said he would approach the police and file a complaint against the Department if the cabling is not installed properly.
