The Embassy of India, Seoul has issued an advisory for Indian nationals travelling to Jeju Island under its visa waiver scheme after Indian content creator Sachin Awasthi alleged he was detained for 38 hours and denied entry.
The mission said the advisory aims to minimise inconvenience, entry denial, or repatriation risks for Indian travellers. It stressed that Jeju’s visa-free facility is strictly for short-term tourism and that final admission into the Republic of Korea is decided solely by immigration authorities at Jeju International Airport.

The embassy underlined that the waiver does not guarantee entry even with valid documents. Travellers must carry printed copies of key papers, including confirmed return tickets, hotel bookings for the entire stay, a detailed day-wise itinerary, proof of sufficient funds, and passports valid for at least six months. Travel insurance and accommodation contact details are strongly recommended.
Officials warned that passengers unable to clearly explain their travel plans or financial preparedness may face denial of entry. Immigration interviews on arrival are routine, and visitors have been advised to respond calmly, truthfully, and consistently.
The mission also clarified that the Jeju visa waiver does not permit travel to mainland South Korea. Attempting to leave the island without an appropriate visa could result in future travel bans.
In his social media posts, Awasthi claimed he was held in conditions “similar to a jail” with limited access to food and communication before being sent back. While acknowledging that immigration decisions rest with the host country, the embassy said it cannot overturn such decisions but will provide assistance where possible.
The episode has renewed focus on Jeju’s visa waiver rules, with the mission urging Indian travellers to prepare thoroughly and remain fully aware of entry requirements.
