The board of Tata Sons on Tuesday deferred a decision on the re-appointment of Natarajan Chandrasekaran for a third term as Chairman, signalling potential differences within the holding company of the diversified conglomerate. His current term is set to end in February 2027.
While no official statement was issued after the meeting, sources said Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts — which holds a 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons — raised concerns over losses in certain group companies. He was also reportedly not in favour of listing Tata Sons and sought a written commitment on the matter.
Several board members are learnt to have backed Chandrasekaran, arguing that the performance of one loss-making company should not overshadow the group’s overall progress or the chairman’s contribution. Some directors even called for a vote, but Chandrasekaran himself urged a deferral.
Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987 and became Chairman of Tata Sons in 2017. Under his leadership, the group’s major listed companies have seen significant growth, even as Tata Trusts continues to hold decisive influence with its 66 per cent stake.
