Employee convicted in 13-yr-old misappropriation case

Crime and punishment: Accused swindled Rs 3.33 lakh; will be heard on point of sentence today

PANJIM: The Panjim Chief Judicial Magistrate of First Class (VJM) Aruna Fernandes convicted Pritpal Singh for misappropriation of Rs 3.33 lakh in July 2008. The accused will be heard on point of sentence on Monday.

In July 2008, Derrick Perreira, manager of Aqua World, St Inez-Panjim had filed a complaint against Preetpal Singh, residing at Santa Cruz for allegedly misappropriating Rs 3,33,020. Singh who was employed at Aqua World as marketing executive allegedly committed misappropriation of cash between April 1, 2008 and June 2008. He was responsible for collection of cheques/cash from hotels and travel agents towards booking for boat cruises of Aqua World. 

Although he collected the money on behalf of his firm,  he  did not deposit the said cash with the company’s account and allegedly utilised it for his own use there by committing misappropriation punishable under section 408 of Indian Penal Code (IPC). The case was registered and investigated by Police Inspector Rahul T Parab, then posted as police sub Inspector at Panjim police station. 

After detailed investigation and receiving of handwriting report, the case was chargesheeted in the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Panjim. During the trial, the prosecution represented by Assistant Public Prosecutor Siddhi Dhananjay Mamledare Sawant examined a total of nine witnesses including handwriting expert Venugopal Rao, govt examiner of questioned documents, Hyderabad. 

After evaluating the evidence brought on record by the prosecution, the CJM convicted Singh, who will now be heard on point of sentence.
