PANJIM: The Goa Government Employees’ Association (GGEA) expressed satisfaction over their pen down strike Monday declaring it a success throughout the State. The government on the other hand downplayed the effect of the strike saying it was minimal.
The pen down strike saw government servants punching in and then not doing any work. Essential services such as health, water supply, electricity and transport (RND and KTC) were functioning.
Offices in talukas such as Bardez, Ponda, Salcete, Mormugao, Quepem and Canacona wore a deserted look while in Panjim, the Collectorate and Directorate of Accounts did not draw a good response. Although the employees had observed the strike, they were forced to work under threat for sometime due to maintenance of law and order.
Over 30,000 employees or about 50% of the total strength of the State Government employees are supporting the strike.
GGEA claimed the strike was a major success and said various taluka committees conveyed to GGEA that it was observed cent percent. According to feedback from taluka committees, employees expressed their willingness to march to the Assembly in the event the government fails to settle their long-pending demand. However, GGEA will shortly convene a joint meeting of various taluka and working committees to decide the future course of action.
