PONDA: Ponda locals with help from authorities evicted vendors encroaching on footpaths to sell sofa sets illegally and blocking the pathways. The Commercial Tax Department initiated action in the case of illegal sale of goods, here.
According to social worker Viraj Sapre, vendors from outside come and sell goods such as fish, apples and other items by occupying the pavements, which make it difficult for people to walk. “They do not take any permission while selling these goods. Due to the fact that goods are kept on the roads and footpaths, accidents also happen and the Commercial Tax Department took notice of it today,” Sapre said.
“Some vendors brought sofa sets on the pavement in front of St Mary’s Chapel in Ponda, and started selling them in the open. This blocked the pathway of school students of St Mary’s High School located nearby,” he said.
The gravity of the situation prompted Sapre, Rock Dias and others to inform the Commercial Tax Department officials at Ponda, who took cognisance of the matter and promptly fined these vendors.
