Encroachments continue unabated in Vasco markets during festive season

VASCO: Against the backdrop of recent demands from the locals for the removal of encroachments in the markets that fall under the jurisdiction of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), the festive season has not seen any action taken against them.

What’s worse is the encroachments on footpaths and places to walk for the pedestrian thus making it difficult at times for the public to pass through. A walk through the Vasco vegetable market is one such example.

Local resident Jennifer Lewis added that due to vendors obstructing roads it becomes difficult for women, senior citizens to roam freely in the market. “Authorities should take a serious look at this situation and do something before it goes beyond control,” Lewis added.

Peter Andrade, another  Vasco local said that presently in Vasco, there is a total failure in implementation of rules by the municipality. “Nowadays I feel the Mormugao municipality has taken a stand to accept sopo and allow people to do wherever and whatever business they want to do. They seem more interested in collecting sopo than bringing in some discipline, “he added.

Meanwhile, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes issued an order on December 23, 2020, to carry out the removal of encroachment on municipal footpaths, municipal roads and the road widening area spaces within the municipal jurisdiction. A special cell of six municipal employees has been ordered to undertake this drive only from January 4, 2021 and the compliance report has to be submitted thereafter.
