MARGAO: In response to suggestions from the Electricity Department officials, the Margao Municipal Council has implemented energy-saving measures and issued instructions to its staff to minimise unnecessary electricity usage during working hours.
The in-charges of various sections within the civic body have been warned that they will be held accountable for any excessive electricity usage.
On Tuesday morning, a team led by Abhinav Apte from the Electricity Department conducted an awareness program for munici pality staff in Margao, emphasising the importance of saving electricity. Several councillors attended the event as well.
Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar explained that the power department officials provided insights on how to conserve electricity, both at home and in the workplace.
The awareness programme covered various technical aspects related to energy conservation.
Shirodkar further stated that, based on the suggestions, he has instructed all staff members, particularly the heads of different sections, to monitor and control electricity usage. He emphasized that each section head would be responsible for energy conser- vation, as the municipality has witnessed unnecessary power consu- mption in the past. Blame games
will not be tolerated, added the Chairperson.
Shirodkar informed reporters that the civic body currently incurs electricity charges of approximately Rs two to three lakh per month. Additionally, he mentioned that the use of a biometric attendance system for staff registration will be reinstated after a prolonged period of non-use.
Regarding other updates, the Chairperson shared that the ongoing feast fair at the Old Market has generated revenue of around Rs 25 lakh so far, with expectations of further income in the coming days. Shirodkar also informed that pre-monsoon works are nearly complete, but tree trimming before the monsoon season will be carried out under the supervision of the Deputy Collector’s office due to a shortage of available labour.
