PANJIM: Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Monday decided to defer the implementation of the enforcement of the amended Motor Vehicles Act by one month as Pollution Under Control (PUC) centres are inundated by motorists to get their vehicles’ pollution checked and failing to acquire the certificates on time.

In the wake of the enforcement of the amended Motor Vehicles Act from April 1, rush at these centres have increased manifold. “Many motorists are finding it difficult to get the PUC certificate because the number of centres in comparison to the current demand is lesser. We are recording 6,000 PUC certificates as a result of which many others are waiting for their turn. Therefore in the joint meeting, we discussed allowing them one month’s time to obtain the PUC,” he said after the meeting with related departments at Porvorim on Monday.

At the backdrop of demand to increase the validity of PUC certificates from six months, Godinho cited that it is a Central Act, however, a proposal will be submitted to the concerned ministry to increase the validity period from six months to one year.

The minister reiterated that while Goa has imposed “bare minimum fine” after deferring its implementations for two years, riders/drivers should obey the law to prevent themselves from penalty.
