MARGAO: Curtorim Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has demanded that the State government ensure nothing around the beef ban that has happened in the country happen in the state.
Addressing a press conference, Reginaldo said, “India is a secular country and not a theocratic State where the government decides what comes on each citizen’s plate. The Central government is touching the secular fabric of the country.”
“I don’t know why the Centre is interfering in everything even after it is known that live stocks and animal markets come under State list. Even cruelty to animals comes under concurrent list,” questioned Aleixo.
“It is now for our State government to decide what we want and for the alliance partner also to see what is happening in the State. This is surprisingly happening since the BJP Government came to power,” said Aleixo.
Issues like the present beef ban amongst others, he said, need to be perceived in the general context. “It is obviously necessary for every Indian to understand that they live in a society wherein the feelings and sentiments of all its religions are handled carefully in a spirit of brotherhood. Thus, we do need to respect the feelings of the Hindus in respect to the way their ‘Sacred Cow’ is treated while at the same time condemning the way the ‘Holy Cow’ is being literally milked to polarize and divide our societies on religious grounds to suit vote bank political agendas,” said Reginaldo.
“No religion allows torture and murder of fellow human beings in the name of vigilantism of any kind. May the souls of people like the Dadri, UP victim of cow vigilantism Mohammad Akhlaq who was lynched on the basis of suspicion of there being beef in his refrigerator; may rest in peace,” Reginaldo said.
