Ensure regular supply of beef, Mapusa vendors urge CM

MAPUSA: Mapusa beef vendors on Tuesday sought Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant’s intervention to ensure regular supply of beef from Karnataka to Goa.

The vendors claimed that their shops in Mapusa are closed since last Friday due to non-supply of beef from Karnataka. They informed that supply of beef has stopped after the BJP-led government in Karnataka passed the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill (2020). The vendors said nobody is ready to transport the meat or livestock because if anyone is found transporting them, they are slapped with a fine ranging between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh. There was a similar issue during Easter, vendors informed adding that now with weddings, Christmas and New Year approaching they are totally dependent on the Karnataka for supply of beef since there is no meat stock or livestock available in Goa as the Goa Meat Complex lacks the required facilities.

Vendors further said if their business is shut due to non-supply of beef then hundreds will be rendered unemployed.

Vendors said both Maharashtra and Karnataka governments have banned beef which has directly affected the sales in Goa.
