Ensure surgical face masks, sanitisers are available at affordable rates: Metrology Dept

Warns of penal action against those found manufacturing or selling masks and sanitisers illegally

PANJIM: The Legal Metrology Department has appealed to the manufacturing units and suppliers to ensure that N95 or a simple surgical face masks and sanitisers are available at affordable rates.

The department has also warned of penal action against those found manufacturing or selling masks and sanitisers illegally. 

The appeal comes following shortage of N95 or a simple surgical face masks and sanitisers at stores and chemists with a few selling the same at a double price.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Controller, Legal Metrology, has appealed agencies to prevent overcharging in respect of masks, sanitisers so that they are available at affordable rates to health service providers and consumers at large.

The department has informed that Section 18(1) of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 provides that ‘no person will manufacture, pack, sell, import, distribute, deliver, offer, expose or possess for sale any pre-packaged commodity unless such packaged item is in such standard quantities or number and bears thereon such declarations and particulars in such manner as may be prescribed.’

 Also, ‘no retails dealer or other person including manufacturer, packer, importer, and wholesale dealer will make any sale of any commodity in packed form at a price exceeding the retail sale price thereof.’
