PANJIM: In a bid to allay fear of formalin laced fish amongst consumers, the Goan Fisherman Association has demanded the government set up a laboratory at Margao wholesale fish market, where fish samples can be tested on arrival.
Addressing media persons, Association President Harshad Gomes sought the State government’s intervention because their vehicles with fish were being stopped from entering Karnataka as a consequence of ban on fish import..
Gomes said that association has already approached Health Minister Vishwajit Rane to find a solution.
“The Goan’s fish trucks from Panjim, Betul and Vasco have stopped on the border and the fish filled in it are getting spoilt. Due to the restriction imposed on fish imports, the locals of Karnataka are taking revenge and putting the Goan fishermen in stress,” he said.
He said that government need to work out some solution at the earliest as the community is facing hardship due to loss of business.
The Association has demanded that high-tech lab be set up in Margao wholesale fish market to clear doubts of the local consumers regarding formalin. “There is still a fear in the minds of consumers. This is the only way out to allay their fear. This will also help in smooth import of fish,” he stated.
