VASCO: The Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) has served a show-cause notice to former Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson and Councillor Sharad alias Nitin Chopdekar seeking his disqualification over reported allotment of two shops in the municipal modern market at Vasco during his tenure as chairperson in 2005-06.
The DMA has also served another show-cause notice to Chopedkar seeking his disqualification for depositing Rs 3.02 crore in a private bank, a one-time Golden Jubilee grants sanctioned by the earlier government, without council’s resolution.
According to sources in the municipal council, Chopdekar during his tenure as chairperson in 2005-06 had reportedly allotted two shops without taking DMA’s approval.
“Chopedkar also failed to take approval from the council before allotting the shops to the persons of his choice,” stated the source.
The source further informed that Chopdekar served as vice chairperson for six months and took over as a caretaking chairperson on October 28, 2011, as former chairperson Suchita Shirodkar had resigned to make way for the new lady councillor to take over the reins of the chairperson.
“It was during this time when Chopedkar was the acting chairperson, the council received grants which were deposited in a private bank,” added the source. According to the minutes of the council meeting, the amount was earlier put in a fixed deposit in a private bank for a period of 39 days from October 22, 2011, to November 30, 2011, at 6% interest and the proceeds were credited into savings bank account.
