MARGAO: Margao excise officials seized around 80 boxes of country made liquor from the roadside near the Ramnagar road junction in Sao Jose de Areal village on Wednesday evening.
The seizure was effected by the team headed by Excise Inspector Nilesh Naik during an inspection round when they spotted a group of labourers on the roadside. On suspicion, the labourers were questioned over their presence with the goods, but they fled away, leaving the goods on the roadside.
Upon inspection, the excise team found countrymade liquor bottles stacked in 80 boxes worth around Rs 45,000 to 50,000 in the market. With no one claiming ownership of the consignment, the boxes were later transported to the excise office in Margao.
The liquor consists of brandy bottles of Honey and Solo make and excise officials are investigating whether the seized liquor is genuine or spurious.
Excise Superintendent Milagres Soares said the department will further investigate into the source of the consignment and its destination. “The seizure has been intimated to Excise Commissioner P S Reddy”, Milagres said, adding that the inspection team will further intensify patrolling to unearth movement of liquor.
