PONDA: The residents of Ponda have demanded that the renovation-cum-repair work of Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) “Muktidham” crematorium, which is progressing at a slow pace, be expedited.
It is pertinent to note that the crematorium is used by people for performing final rites and for the past several years its condition had worsened.
It may be recalled that eight months ago, PMC started the repair-cum-renovation work of the crematorium. The work was taken up as the old crematorium building was in a pathetic state causing inconvenience to the public. The renovation work commenced at an estimated cost of Rs 1.20 crore under the Fourteenth Finance Commission funds.
According to locals, so far most of the work has been pending and due to this people are forced to undergo hardship in performing final rites. The renovation work includes new roof sheets, new floor tiles, storage for wood, parking area, repair of the toilet and stand, used for performing final rites besides other works.
PMC chairperson Ritesh Naik said that the work was taken up as the public was facing hardship due to dilapidated condition and leakage in the building during monsoon.
He said more than 60 per cent work stands completed and remaining work would be ready by December-end.
