VASCO: The expose by Herald in the past that Sada jail inmates are using cell phones for communicating with the people outside, mainly for extortion bid, has been confirmed.
One of the Sada sub-jail inmates Milton George who is presently undergoing treatment at GMC, Bambolim after he was allegedly assaulted and poisoned by jail inmates has made stunning revelation through his statement to the Mormugao Police.
In his statement, the victim has said that he received several calls from the jail inmates on different occasions while he was on parole demanding money which was collected by a jail guard.
It may be recalled that Milton George, a convict serving a six-month sentence at Sada Sub Jail was hospitalised at GMC, Bambolim on Monday evening, after he was allegedly assaulted and poisoned by four jail inmates for not meeting their demand for money.
In his statement to the police, George has said that during his month-long parole from April 28 to May 27, thrice he received phone calls (suspected to be from Ganpat Shetye) demanding money. In the first instance, he was asked to collect Rs 10,000 from a person (Ganpat’s friend) and handover the same to Jail Guard Khaja Naruddin, which he did. But on the second and third instances, he was asked to arrange Rs 15,000 and Rs 50,000, respectively. The former, he arranged, but could not arrange the latter.
Therefore upon his arrival in the jail on May 27, 2016, the inmates assaulted George. The assault was reportedly brought to notice of senior jail officials but since there were no serious injuries, the matter was later compromised by the jail authorities.
Therefore upon his arrival in the jail on May 27, 2016, the inmates assaulted George and later poisoned him with phenol.
Meanwhile, taking serious note of the alleged assault and poisoning incident, the Inspector General of Prison Elvis Gomes has ordered inquiry into the whole case.
“It is a very serious allegation and I have asked the Assistant Jail Superintendent Bhanudas Pednekar to investigate the case and submit his report to me. I have also asked him to take possession of all the relevant documents and material evidence so that the same can be handed over to the police,” Gomes said.
Interestingly, the Mormugao Police, who are investigating the case, have asked for Call Detail Record (CDR) of George’s cell phone which he was using during his parole period. The police have also asked for the CCTV footage from the jail authorities and the case now depends on the CCTV footage and CDR records. Further investigation is in progress and Herald is closely monitoring the case.
