Extremely heavy rainfall forecast in Goa today

PANJIM: With extremely heavy rainfall forecast for Goa on Thursday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has put the coastal State on red alert. People are advised against outdoor activities, while fishermen are asked not to venture into sea due to rough weather condition. 
The State has been on orange alert since Tuesday due to a low pressure area developed in Arabian Sea along with cyclonic circulation. 
IMD Goa on Wednesday said that the Well Marked Low Pressure Area over central parts of Arabian Sea now lies over east-central Arabian Sea and neighbourhood with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 4.5 km above mean sea level. 
“It is very likely to concentrate into a Depression during next 24 hours and into a Cyclonic Storm during subsequent 48 hours. It is likely to move initially east northeastwards over east central Arabian Sea till October 25 and then west-northwestwards with gradual intensification,” IMD said. 
“Extremely heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places on October 25. People are advised to abstain from outdoor activities as much as possible and also watch for weather updates,” the weather department has said. 
It has said that fishermen should avoid venturing into sea and those already in deep seas should return immediately as the conditions are going to be bad. 
IMD has also said that due to gale winds, there is possibility of interruption of road, rail and air transport also power supply interruption. 
Since Monday, several parts of the State have been receiving heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.  
State has received 87 percent surplus post monsoon showers. As on date that is from October 1 to October 23, State has recorded 258.3 mm of post monsoon rains as against the average 137.9 mm. 
State had recorded 33 percent surplus rains during the four-month long monsoon season.
