FACT-FINDING: Vidya Vikas Mandal suspends Kare Law College principal, librarian

MARGAO: In view of the Goa University’s (GU) inquiry committee to ascertain the truth into the allegations of favouritism and rigging of the college entrance test, the management of the Margao-based G R Kare Law College suspended principal Saba Da Silva and librarian Anand Salve on Thursday.

Vidya Vikas Mandal (VVM) confirmed to media persons that Da Silva and Salve have been suspended.

VVM will also conduct its own inquiry into the allegations and Da Silva has been instructed not to visit the college campus without the management’s permission.

It is likely that Da Silva will be called to depose before VVM’s inquiry committee.

It has been alleged that Da Silva modified the entrance exam norms for admissions to the BA LLB programme at the eleventh hour to favour his son.

Sources revealed that on Wednesday, GU had sent strict instructions to the college management that they should take serious note about Da Silva’s alleged behaviour and actions and recommended that he should be suspended till the fresh admission process is completed.

It may be noted that the matter is also being taken up by the High Court (HC).

The matter is being taken  following the decision of the Goa University to declare the previously concluded admission process to the two Law Colleges in the State as null and void. This had led to a huge outrage amongst the 180 affected students as they were already attending classes, which were also suspended. The students were informed that they will have to retake the GU-CLAT entrance test on August 6 based on which they would be granted admission again.

The students had approached the High Court, which had ordered a status quo on the admission to the law colleges until Monday.

Sources revealed that GU’s assessment of the allegations is being termed as bringing shame to the college and the education system.

GU has also made it clear under the admission criteria, that the merit list will be drawn on the performance at HSSC and GU-CLAT 2023 score wherein there will be 50 per cent weightage of the marks scored at the HSSC examination and 50 per cent weightage to the marks scored in the GU-CLAT 2023.

This assumes significance as the allegations were about how the admission process diluted the weightage of HSSC result allegedly to favour the admission of the Principal’s son.
