Failure to repair road irks Gaondongrim residents

CANACONA: Angered over the failure by authorities to repair an internal road, residents of Gaondongrim blocked the road with wooden logs and stones, amid reports that a minister was to visit the area to inaugurate a newly constructed water storage tank.

The residents of Ghatwar-Katvem, an internal locality in Gaondongrim housing over 40 families, had demanded the repair of a road leading from the main village road to their locality.
They have stated that a stretch of about 3 kms has been in dilapidated condition and has never been repaired since it was constructed some years ago.
The residents complained that while the main Gaondongrim road has often received fresh coats of hot mix, the road leading to their locality has been neglected even though the work had been tendered long back.
According to sources, word had spread in the ward that a minister was to visit their locality on the same road on Tuesday morning to inaugurate a newly constructed water storage tank at Ghatwar-Karvem.
Some local youth blocked the road with wooden material and laterite stones at two places late Monday evening, to prevent the minister from entering the area to inaugurate the water tank.
When enquired, a source at the PWD office dismissed rumours that a minister was to inaugurate the water tank on Tuesday.
“There was no way that any minister could have gone for the inauguration on Tuesday. We are yet to get an electricity connection at the site and it may take another 15 days or so, before the water tank is made operational,” informed the source.
A source close to a minister also feigned ignorance and said the minister was never scheduled to inaugurate the water tank at Karvem-Gaondongrim on Tuesday.
“In fact, the PWD (water supply) is yet to make the required payment to the electricity department. As a result, there has been a delay in the power connection to the newly constructed water tank, to be used for storing water for supplying to the locality.”
