MAPUSA: Calangute police on Thursday busted a fake call centre operating in a hotel at Gaurawado, Calangute and arrested five persons for cheating citizens of United States.
According to Calangute Police Station Police Inspector Nolasco Raposo, on September 30, at around 23.40 hours, a raid was conducted on receipt of specific and reliable information about a fake call centre set up in a hotel, at Gaurawado-Calangute.
The accused persons use to collect personal details of US citizens through illegal means by using computers resource and virtual private network (VPN). They further use to contact the victims through interactive voice response system by impersonating as officials of US Social Security Administration and convince them that they were into illegal acts like fraud, illegal drugs peddling, defaulter for paying tax and to settle the same, the victims were asked to pay money in the form of electronic payment mode. The accused persons use to then withdraw the money in Indian currency at Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
