Fake call centre busted at Panjim, 13 held for fleecing US citizens

Police suspect an inter-State gang of cyber criminals; say accused introduced malicious software on laptops, tabs and other devices of US citizens and claiming to be Microsoft Service Centre, sought money to clear the device of the malicious softwares

PANJIM: The Panjim police arrested 13 persons including a woman on the charge of running a fake call centre from a building at St Inez, here on Friday. 

The police seized laptop and other electronic items worth Rs 30 lakh in the raid conducted on the seventh floor of a building. The accused hailed from different States including Gujarat, Nagaland, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand. The two masterminds identified as Tapansha Gujarat and Jaimin Mizstri as well as most persons from the team were from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The woman in the team was from Maharashtra. 

Police suspect it to be an inter-State gang of cybercriminals. They introduced malicious software on laptops, tabs and other devices of US citizens and claiming to be Microsoft Service Centre, sought money to clear the device of the malicious softwares. 

Meanwhile, the Goa police have raised its concerns with their Gujarat counterparts over fake call centres being operated by Gujarat natives in the State. 

In the recent past, many fake call centres busted by Goa police are found to be operated by Gujarat masterminds.
