PANJIM: The Cyber Crime Cell of the Goa Police has busted a fake sailors’ employment racket and arrested a Guwahati resident involved in the crime.
In a press statement, the police said a shipping company Ouvert Marine filed a complaint claiming that some unknown persons had created a fake website of the company.
The complainant said that the alleged fake company had issued placement letters to several aspiring sailors and asked them to pay fees for processing placements upto Rs 5 lakh per victim. Several complaints were received in this regard by DG Shipping, the complainant said.
On receiving the complaint, Cyber Cell immediately took down the fake website and froze all accounts. Further detailed investigation led the Cyber Cell to the prime accused — Sumit Upadhyay– who was arrested while escaping from Mumbai airport.
To hide his real identity, the accused used several fake identities, SIM cards and travelled across UP, Delhi, Mumbai and Guwahati, police said. The accused was apprehended with help of Crime Branch Guwahati.
The accused, however, then made an attempt to abscond to Mumbai where joint team of ATS Mumbai, CISF Sahar Airport and Cyber Cell Goa led by PSI Sarvesh Sawant apprehended the accused in the airplane, police said.
