PANJIM: Former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress national vice-president Luizinho Faleiro was on Monday declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal Assembly in a by-election.
All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) last week had nominated Faleiro for the by-poll necessitated following resignation of Arpita Ghosh from the Upper House. Ghosh resigned on September 15 this year.
Faleiro’s election to the Upper House was announced by West Bengal Assembly Secretary Bhattacharya, who was the returning officer for the by-election to the Council of States, 2022 from West Bengal.
Faleiro is the third TMC leader to be elected as Rajya Sabha MP unopposed after Jawhar Sircar and Sushmita Dev, who too were respectively elected unopposed in two by-polls held in August and September this year.
Faleiro is likely to leave for Kolkata on Tuesday and collect his certificate. He will take oath as new Rajya Sabha Member on opening day of the winter session of Parliament on November 29 and is expected to speak in the Upper House next day, informed TMC sources.
