VASCO: The government will soon launch a scheme to provide a compensation of Rs two lakh to each family that loses a member in a road accident, said Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Tuesday.

While the procedure for this accidental compensation scheme still needs to be worked out, Godinho said that the claim has to be filed within six months of an accidental death.

“After I took over as Minister, I cleared all the applications and paid compensation of Rs two lakh to every person who had filed the claim. I had a discussion with CM Pramod Sawant and we decided that there will be a one-time scheme, where we offer Rs two lakh compensation for all the people who had died in road accidents and had applied for this scheme, even if it was not within the six-month time frame,” said Godinho.

He added that poor families who lose their loved ones in road accidents go through very tough times, and said he realised this when a young girl died near the Chicalim panchayat a few months ago.

“I really felt for her and her family and because of her, the entire Goa will benefit from this scheme, as we will make it easy to claim the compensation,” he said.

The Minister said that CM Sawant has improved the scheme even further, in order for families to receive compensation even if their relatives succumb to injuries sustained in an accident. The Rs two lakh compensation will still be routed through the Transport Department, he said, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at Zuarinagar, Vasco.
