PONDA: A family dispute late Friday night came to a violent end when a 34-year-old man allegedly clobbered his father to death in their house at Deulwada-Borim.
According to Ponda Police Inspector C L Patil, the police received a call from the staff at Ponda Sub-District hospital stating that the body of Kumar Auti (61) had been brought to the hospital with suspicious injury marks.
A police team went to the hospital and later conducted an inquiry with family members at the police station. The family initially claimed that Kumar may have had an accidental fall or may have been attacked by an adversary.
The family is originally from Kolhapur-Maharashtra, but was residing at Borim since the last few years.
“I immediately doubted their explanation and I informed the family members that we were going to inspect the body at the hospital. Without alerting them, a police team instead proceeded to the house of the deceased at Borim and met the wife of the prime accused Saroj(34),” said PI Patil.
“She was alone at home at the time and was unaware of the statements given by other family members. She disclosed that her husband had committed the crime.”
“From what we have gathered so far, the incident took place at about 11.30 pm as Kumar was discussing the marriage of his second daughter. He was of the view that the marriage should be conducted in December, while Saroj insisted that it should be held in May,” PI Patil added.
Kumar has three sons and two daughters, while his wife had expired about six month ago.
Kumar and Saroj then got into an argument over this issue and other family matters. In a fit of anger, Saroj grabbed a baseball bat and allegedly clobbered his father on his head and legs. Kumar collapsed and died on the spot following multiple injuries, police said.
Kumar’s second daughter is reportedly a baseball instructor and it is believed that Saroj grabbed one of the baseball bats to commit the crime.
The body was then shifted to the hospital by family members and they initially tried to hide the incident, until police investigations unearthed the crime.
Saroj has been arrested under Section 302 IPC and is presently in police custody, as police investigations are in progress.
