‘Fani’ will have no impact on Goa: IMD

PANJIM: Following the weather warnings issued for the East Coast of India due to cyclone Fani, Goa Met Department has assured that the cyclone will not have an impact on Goa and the Konkan region.
Speaking to Herald, Met Goa scientist Dr SD Sanab said, “Though the cyclone may have an impact on the east coast of India, we do not see it having any impact on the west coast or Goa. The cyclone’s range is about 1000 kms but it will not impact Goa.”
Responding to a question on the possibility of any such occurrence in the west coast, he said that India Meteorological Department has not forecast any such eventuality for Goa or the Konkan. “IMD has been technologically advanced in forecasting any such occurrence and no such cyclonic forecast for Goa has been predicted,” he stated.
Asked about any warnings for those venturing into the sea, he stated that since there will be no impact to the west coast there is no warning issued for fishermen in Goa and Konkan.
Sanab said that the administration has taken all precautionary measures on the east coast, especially in Odisha which will directly encounter the cyclone. He said that about 8 lakh people have been evacuated and other precautionary measures have been taken.
He further said that since the cyclone is moving northwards, the major impact would be in Odisha and some impact on southern parts of West Bengal and northern parts of Andhra Pradesh.
