Farmers allege trapping of peacocks in Devabagh

CANACONA: Farmers in Devabagh, Canacona, have alleged migrants trapping peacocks in abandoned fields by using snares.
The peacocks fetch them a handsome price of Rs 5000 per bird and are transported to Margao by rickshaw at night, allege locals.
A farmer horticulture farm at the outskirts of Devabagh said that the migrants are using cruel method of snare trapping to catch peacocks.
It has come to light that a group of migrants are using fine gauge galvanised wire to make snares which are tied and positioned at the neck level in open fields where peacocks usually move for prey.
When this correspondent visited the abandoned fields at Devabagh it was not possible to establish the truth behind the allegations as there are vast tracts of this type of fields which have remained fallow for quite some time but most of the locals agreed that many peahens come to the outskirts in the area for breeding and feeding purposes.
