Farmers demand exemption for sugarcane trucks, buses

PONDA: Farmers from Goa and Karnataka have demanded service road, during the closure of the Goa-Belgaum national highway via Anmod, for transporting sugarcane to the Sanjeevani Sugar Factory at Dharbandora and also for passenger buses.
The Goa-Belgaum national highway via Anmod has been closed for road widening by the Karnataka government.
To press for their demand, the farmers of both the States met the Karnataka authorities at Anmod on Friday and pressed them not to close Anmod-Goa road for trucks transporting sugarcane, passenger buses and light vehicles.
The farmers told the Karnataka authorities that since the sugarcane crushing season has just commenced, they should allow transportation of sugarcane from Belgaum, Khanapur, Ramnagar Anmod to the Sanjeevani Sugar Factory.
Besides, the Karnataka authorities were told that since the tourist season is at its peak, closing the road for passenger buses plying on Belgaum-Anmod-Goa route would lead to loss of business on both the sides.
Locals in Belgaum, Ramnagar and Anmod suggested that heavy trucks, except sugarcane trucks, may be diverted to Goa either through Chorla or Karwar routes.
Sources from Anmod said that the locals have decided to meet the Karwar Collector seeking for relaxation for passenger buses and sugarcane trucks via Anmod route to Goa.
