bicholim:  Famers from Chorao with the help of the government authorities were successful in repairing three breaches on their Khazan land bandh, thereby avoiding the flow of saline water into their fields and other areas.  This has given a ray of hope for about 100-odd Cava Khazan farmers to cultivate the fields.

Since the last year, water has been entered into their fields and has even flooded the nearby road.

“Last year, the Talathi was made the manager. At first the agriculture dept repaired the breaches but even after that, there were three more breaches. The sluice gate was also damaged and because of all this, saline water had entered the fields,” said Premanand Mhambre, former Chorao sarpanch. After this a committee was made under the leadership of farner Shrikant Priolkar. “The farmers from Chorao repaired the bandhara and in the next few days even the sluice gate will also be repaired.” Mhambre added. Priolkar said theyrepaired the bandh, with an estimated cost of Rs 2.80 lakh.

“Since last one year nothing was grown in these fields now after this work we hope that the farmers would again cultivate their abandoned fields. The farmers would get lakhs of rupees in the field,” Priolkar added.
