Fatal mishaps double up in October as compared to last year

Killer roads claimed 23 lives last month as compared to 12 in Oct ’21

PANJIM: Fatal accidents in the State nearly doubled in October this year as compared to accidents reported during the corresponding month last year. In all, 23 persons were killed in last month as compared to 12 deaths in October last year. 

Also 16 riders killed last month as against seven deaths in October 2021 while, 217 lives were claimed by road accidents during the last 10 months of this year.

From January 1 to October 31, 2022, Goa saw 217 accidental deaths, the cumulative number had stood at 166 during the same period last year, as per the statistics released by the Goa Traffic Police. 

The State saw 23 accident deaths last month which is nearly 11 more as compared to October 2021 when the accidental death count stood at 12. However, total number of accidents which occurred in October last year and this year are almost the same and stood at 252 and 251 respectively.  

As per the statistics, 16 of the 23 who died in October 2022, are two-wheeler riders and four are pedestrians. In October last year, seven riders and two pedestrians were killed. 

Last month, during an open forum on road safety management, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had assured to implement short term and long term road safety measures from next month. A report based on suggestions received during the open forum to reduce road accidents has also been prepared jointly by the Traffic Police, Department of Transport and the PWD, for its implementation.

PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral had said that his department had rectified almost 11 accident black spots over the last few months while, another 12 black spots remained due to hurdles of land acquisition and had appealed to civil society to help the government to overcome them.

In addition to this, the State through Traffic Police had identified 600 stretches of roads of which most are rectified and 146 remain to be rectified.
