MARGAO: Residents of Fatorda are dismayed as a dumping site, located just a few metres from the South Goa District Hospital, has become a glaring eyesore in the area.
The site, strewn with numerous black garbage bags and various other waste materials, is prominently visible from the National Highway, casting a shadow on the ‘progressive’ reputation of the Fatorda Constituency. The lack of action from authorities has triggered serious concerns among locals regarding the issue.
Responding to the situation, citizens have expressed disgust, pointing out the obvious health hazards, especially considering the proximity of the district hospital.
Even as efforts to remove the legacy dump at the Sonsoddo dumpsite are finally underway, after several decades of and a citizens’ petition before the High Court, this new site opposite the district hospital is swiftly transforming into another Sonsoddo, say locals.
A visit to the stretch opposite the hospital revealed extensive dumping of plastic waste, along with coconut shells and raw chicken waste.
Currently, the plastic waste is scattered across the area, attracting a large number of street dogs. Residents highlight evidence suggesting that the waste originates from local hotels, with medical waste also being dumped here at night. Despite the conspicuous pile of garbage visible even from the highway, no authorities have taken action to clear the site.
“It is shocking that no authorities are initiating action or clearing the site, despite the growing mound of garbage that can be seen even from the highway,” remarked Costodio Fernandes, a resident of Fatorda.
Fernandes pointed out instances of waste floating into River Sal during the last monsoon, exacerbating environmental concerns.
Expressing frustration, Pradeep Naik, another local resident, criticised the Margao Municipal Council and health authorities for their apparent lack of concern, emphasising that the dumpsite has become a nuisance for people living in the vicinity.
“It is unacceptable for the authorities to wait until a complaint is filed. It is their duty to address illegal activities, particularly illegal waste dumping, and to implement action plans,” Naik stated emphatically.
